The Schengen Information System (SIS) is a large-scale European database that allows countries within the Schengen Area to share alerts about people and objects for border control and law enforcement. Individuals can be listed in SIS if, for example, they have been deported, denied entry, or considered a threat under certain national regulations.
If you’re currently in Portugal and trying to legalize your status, a SIS alert from another country may prevent you from getting a residence permit, even if you meet the local requirements.
1. Request Correction or Deletion of the SIS Entry
If you confirm there is an alert, you have the right to request that the entry be corrected or deleted, especially if:
Your personal situation has changed
The entry is outdated or unjustified
You are applying for legal residency and can prove integration
Important: Only the country that issued the alert can remove or modify it. Portugal cannot delete the entry made by another member state.
Once you have identified the country that created the SIS alert, you must contact the national authority or the Data Protection Officer (DPO) responsible for SIS management in that country. You can usually find this information on the official government website of that country (e.g. Ministry of Interior, Police, Immigration Office).
This process can be complex, and legal arguments can be needed. It’s highly recommended to get help from a lawyer or legal support organization.
While the SIS alert is still active, AIMA might deny your residence request. However, you should still submit your documentation and explain the situation, showing that you're already taking steps to resolve the SIS issue.
