WHO CAN REQUEST IT?

Portuguese nationality can be requested by the person who wants to obtain it, but also by someone applying on behalf of another person, such as parents applying for nationality for their children.

Portuguese nationality can be valid from birth, as if the person had always been of Portuguese nationality (attribution of nationality), or only from the date on which nationality is granted (acquisition of nationality).

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Online:

  • The nationality application is available online for requests made through a lawyer or solicitor.

  • The lawyer or solicitor must access NacionalidadeOnline and authenticate with their digital certificate.

In-Person:

The Portuguese nationality application can be submitted in person at one of the following locations:

Same-day service (without appointment) is available upon obtaining a ticket:

  • online, through the Siga App.

  • on-site.

  • At the Registos Centrais (location) in Lisbon

  • At a Balcão Nacionalidade info link

  • At the Loja de Cidadão in Odivelas

  • At Civil Registry Offices

  • At the Portuguese Consulate in your area of residence

Go to one of the indicated locations and submit your Portuguese nationality application. Provide the required documents.

By mail:
The nationality application can be submitted by mail, and the form to be completed depends on your specific situation. After filling out the form, send the application to the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais at Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 202, 1099-033 Lisbon.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED 

Birth Certificate

  • A complete birth certificate (preferably a photocopy)

  • It must be legalized (if from another country, it must be apostilled or have a Portuguese consular visa)

  • If not in Portuguese, it must be translated into Portuguese and certified.

Request Form

  • Fill this request form addressed to the Minister of Justice, written in Portuguese, and signed in front of a Registos’ official when the request is delivered.

Proof of Portuguese Language Knowledge in one of the following:

  • A certificate from a Portuguese educational institution

  • A certificate from the Portuguese Language Test (PaN)*

  • A certificate from a recognized Portuguese language center

      *The Proof of Knowledge of the Portuguese Language for the Acquisition of Nationality (PaN) is intended to prove the knowledge of the Portuguese language of foreign citizens over 18 years of age, who meet the conditions to acquire Portuguese nationality.

      • If you cannot read or write, the test can be adapted to your abilities.

    Criminal Record

    • From your country of birth and nationality, and from any country where you have lived since the age of 16.

    • The criminal record must also be translated into Portuguese

    Marriage of Common.Law Partnership (União de Facto) (if applicable):


        • If married, provide the marriage certificate (if foreign, it must be transcribed to the Portuguese registry).

        • If in a common-law partnership (União de facto) with a Portuguese person for more than 3 years, provide a court ruling recognizing the relationship, along with a declaration (less than 3 months old) from the Portuguese spouse confirming they continue to live together.

        • The declaration can be made in person to the official receiving the request or written and signed by the Portuguese citizen, indicating their Citizen Card or ID number, the date of issue and the name of the entity that issued the document.

      Proof of Connection to the Portuguese Community 


          • Ex: employer declaration, Social Security Records, Children’s Birth Reports in Portugal, IRS or salary receipts, utility bills.

          • This is not required if:

          • Married or in civil partnership for at least 6 years.

          • Married or in a civil partnership for at leat 5 years with knowledge of Portuguese

          • Married or in a civil partnership for at least 5 years and born in a Portuguese-Speaking Country.

          • There are children with Portuguese Nationality

          • You’ve legally lived in Portugal for at least 5 years.

          • You’ve lived in Portugal for at least 3 years and are studying in Portugal or know Portuguese

        In case the person was born in Portugal and the parents are not Portuguese 

        • If the mother or father has had portuguese residency in Portugal for the last 5 years (with or without residency title)

        • If the mother or father resides legally in Portugal

        • If the child has been in school for at least one year (it is valid for pre-school, school, secondary school or professional school)
