WHAT IS IT?

The Social Security Identification Number (NISS) enables you access to Portuguese Social Security. NISS required by foreigners, Portuguese individuals, legal representatives and employers (when an employment relation is involved – such as work contract)


WHO CAN APPLY?

Foreigners who can apply for NISS:

  • If you are from the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland - you must present the civil ID document from the country of origin and its copy.
  • If you are from a Non-European country- you must present Passport, Residence Permit, Residence Authorization (temporary or permanent) or other civilian identification document from the country of origin and its copy.


STEP BY STEP GUIDE

  1. The NISS request is made by filling out this 🔗form available on the Social Security portal, to which the necessary documents must be attached in each case.
  2. The request for NISS is done through an online form available at Social Security Portal.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

To national citizens or Foreigners without a Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão)

  • Identification Document not expired at the time of the request which can be:
  • For national citizens without Citizen Card:
    • a copy of the bilhete de identidade (old citizen card);
  • To foreigners who do not have nationality of an European Union country or EEU:
    • a copy of the passport, work visa, Residency Title, or Authorization of Residency. - either from them or Legal Representative.
