WHAT IS IT?
Family mediation aids in the resolutions of conflicts and disagreements. The Sistema de Mediação Laboral (SML) is sponsored by the Ministry of Justice.
These are some of the conflicts that can be tackled:
- Separation or divorce
- regulation, alteration, or non-compliance of parental responsibilities
- deciding the fate of the family home (in cases of separation or divorce)
The mediator is appointed by the FMS (Family Mediation System) or chosen by agreement between the parties. It costs 50 euros for each of the parties involved regardless of the number of sessions that take place. If they are eligible for legal aid, one or both parties may be exempt from paying for the service, or they may pay the fee in installments. The whole process may take around 3 months.

- Identify the matter you wish to reach an agreement on
- Identify the parties involved in the conflict
- Provide any relevant comments/details (optional)
- Review and confirm your request
